Stuart Burns

Student (PhD), UNSW

Stuart Burns was a PhD candidate working with Prof Nagy Valanoor and Dr Daniel Sando at UNSW to study the functional behaviours of ferroelectrics at the nanoscale, using neutron diffraction experiments to investigate multiferroicity of thin films fabricated by pulsed laser deposition. Combining this with focused ion beam nanostructuring and advanced scanning probe microscopy techniques, Stuart aimed to further define the prerequisites for multiferroic device integration into common industrial nanoelectronics. Following completion of his PhD Stuart has taken up a post-doctoral associate role in the Department of Chemistry, University of Calgary. “I’m still in the realm of thin films, now using chemical deposition to study the structure-properties of lead-free piezoelectrics,” says Stuart. “And I’m still watching Essendon every weekend, at whatever hour they are playing!”
