What you need:
- 2 candles
- matches or lighter
What to do:
- Light both candles. One should be standing upright on a flat surface. You can secure it with blu-tack if it does not have a steady base.
- Allow the candles to burn for a few seconds so they warm up. Pour out any wax that pools in the candles.
- Blow out the upright candle.
- Quickly, bring the other candle’s flame into the smoke rising from the upright candle.
- The flame should travel down the smoke, and re-light the candle.
What happens:
The smoke rising from the blown out candle is not actually smoke, it is evaporated wax. When you blow out a candle, a spark can still remain in the wick. If you hold a flame in the evaporated wax while there is still a spark, the flame can travel down the wax and allow the candle to light again. This might take you a few tries to get right, but it is exciting when it works.
