Congratulations to Jemima Goodhew (UQ) – the newest Women in FLEET Honours scholar – and Tommy Bartolo (RMIT), who has received a FLEET writeup scholarship.
- Jemima Goodhew has been working with FLEET CI Prof Matt Davis at UQ on computationally modelling a 2D superfluid Helmholtz resonator, driven by a chemical potential difference. She is particularly interested in the transition to and from turbulence, the factors which influence this transition, and the resulting turbulent states.
- Tommy Bartolo has been a FLEET PhD student since 2017, and is currently finishing his theoretical physics PhD studying the function and application of Majorana fermions in topologically-protected transport, working with FLEET CI Prof Jared Cole at RMIT.
Women in FLEET scholarships for research students are designed to encourage the participation of young women in scientific research and attract high-performing female scientists. Making use of both investigators’ research funds and Centre equity and diversity funds, scholarships are open to students who identify as female and are accepted into an Honours or PhD program to work with FLEET investigators. FLEET’s writeup scholarships were introduced in response to member feedback on the effects of Covid/2020 on their future career prospects, due partly to a potential reduction in research positions. They also worried about their individual competitiveness due to lab closures and reduced productivity. FLEET PhD write-up scholarships aim to help bridge this gap, ensuring students are best placed to transition into the next phase of their research training. See more.
