Pitch training

Scientists need to be able to describe their work in a way that’s quick, clear, compelling, and appropriate to their audience.

Researchers from three ARC Centres of Excellence will spend a day learning the subtle art of the pitch, practicing on each other and on the group.

Researchers will develop a range of pitches to engage an audience with their work: from someone with zero science, right up to a scientist from a different field.

Then, when that lift door opens and they find they’re sharing the next three minutes with the Minister for Science or an ‘angel’ investor, they’ll be able to do their work justice and have the best chances of a positive outcome.

With participants from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Exciton Science, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS) and the ARC Centre of Excellence in  Future Low-Energy Electronics Technologies (FLEET).

Trainer Dr Phil Dooley (philuponscience.com.au) is a science writer, trainer and entertainer. He’s a science writer for Cosmos Magazine, New Scientist, Australian Geographic and more and was selected for the 2018 & 2019 Anthology of Best Australian Science Writing. He has a PhD in laser physics and has performed his own brand of science, music and comedy in Science shows and festivals around the world including Glasgow, Melbourne and London. He also has a Certificate IV in workplace training and assessment.
