The ARC Centre of Excellence FLEET aims to reduce the energy used by electronics by developing novel devices based on topological materials, exciton/exciton-polariton condensates, and non-equilibrium topological and superfluid phenomena. The FLEET research program spans theory and experiment, science and engineering, and uses various platforms ranging from ultra-cold atoms to atomically thin materials.
An important part of FLEET’s mission is to create and maintain an inclusive working environment that resolves the conflict of research and family life. In particular, FLEET offers women-specific mentoring programs and other career support initiatives for women scientists to create a gender equity at the workplace and retain female scientists. FLEET supports family-friendly and flexible work arrangements to focus on outputs rather than physical attendance.
The Fellowship is for early-career academics with research interests that align with one or more of the existing research and/or enabling technology themes of FLEET. If successful, the position will be hosted at the node which most closely matches the candidate’s expertise and research interests (Monash, UNSW, Swinburne, UQ or ANU). All candidates must submit an initial application through the FLEET website.
Working closely with and under supervision of one or more FLEET Chief Investigators (CIs), the WiF Fellow will perform outstanding and original, experimental or theoretical research, aligned with one or more of the FLEET research themes:
- Topological materials, CIs in this theme are: Alex Hamilton, Dimi Culcer, Jan Seidel, Oleg Sushkov, Nagy Valanoor and Oleh Klochan at UNSW; Agustin Schiffrin, Michael Fuhrer and Nikhil Medhekar at Monash.
- Excitonic superfluids, including indirect excitons and exciton-polariton condensates. CIs in this theme are: Elena Ostrovskaya at ANU, Alex Hamilton and Kourosh Kalantar-Zadeh at UNSW; Michael Fuhrer, Qiaoliang Bao, and Meera Parish at Monash, Matt Davis at UQ, and Jeff Davis at Swinburne.
- Light-transformed materials, including ultracold atoms and optically switched semiconductors. CIs in this theme are: Kris Helmerson, Agustin Schiffrin and Meera Parish at Monash; Jeff Davis and Chris Vale at Swinburne; Matt Davis at UQ and Oleg Sushkov at UNSW.
- Synthesis and nanofabrication of atomically thin materials and heterostructures to support the above research themes. CIs in this theme are: Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh, Alex Hamilton, Oleh Klochan, Nagy Valanoor and Jan Seidel at UNSW; Michael Fuhrer and Qiaoliang Bao at Monash.
What we are looking for:
- A PhD degree in physics, materials science or related field
- Demonstrated potential to engage in research relevant to the strategic needs of the area
- Developing or established track record of independent, original research evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations
- A track record of developing and maintaining collaborations within and across research institutions.
